Medical emergency forces tanker to divert to Bermuda

Unexpected visitor: the GAZ Serenity had to divert to Bermuda after a crew member became ill (Photograph supplied)

A gas tanker diverted to Bermuda yesterday after a crew member became ill.

The GAZ Serenity left Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, heading to Gibraltar, when its chief engineer became ill yesterday morning.

After alerting the island’s authorities of the medical emergency, the Panamanian-registered vessel altered course and arrived in Bermudian waters at about 7pm.

She was met by the pilot ship St David, which took the stricken crew member to Ordnance Island in St George’s. He was then taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

After a short delay, the GAZ Serenity, which transports liquid petroleum gas, continued its journey to the Mediterranean.
