Book offers insight into 300-year-old Globe Museum building
Globe Museum, The Story of a House and its People recounts the history of the St George’s edifice and will be available from this weekend.
The book was written by Diana Chudleigh and builds on “in-depth research” into the building, stretching back 300 years, the Bermuda National Trust said.
Ms Chudleigh will sign copies of the book and give a talk at the museum on Saturday. She researched the history of the building, including its previous occupants.
The publication is the culmination of a series done by the author on the BNT’s four public historical properties.
It features information on Bermuda’s history as well as St George’s.
“It is beautifully illustrated with historic and modern photographs, sketches and reproduction documents,” the BNT said.
The building was constructed between 1699 and 1700 by Governor Samuel Day at St George’s, a Unesco World Heritage site. Ownership passed through several hands and in 1970 it was acquired by the trust.
The book, which costs $10, is on sale at the Globe Museum, BNT headquarters at Waterville, 2 Pomander Road, and at local book stores. The full set of four “History of a House” books is available for $35.
Register at bnt.bm for the talk on Saturday, which costs $20 for BNT members and $25 for non-members.
Attendees will have a chance to explore the attic and cellars not usually open to the public.
