Goalkeeper Mark Waddington stole the limelight with standout displays for two teams in one night in the Bermuda Ball Hockey Association league at Pembroke Community Club.

As the regular season draws to a close before the start of the play-offs, Waddington appeared for two teams on the same night and was voted MVP by both after helping BDA Spirits beat Frontier 4-3 in the first match and Positive Image Dental defeat Hamilton Princess 7-6 in the second.

The 58-year-old’s exploits were all the more remarkable given he does not usually play in goals, with his regular position in defence but he is listed as an emergency substitute goalie, meaning he steps in whenever there is a crisis for any of the teams in the league.

With Scott Steele, the BDA Spirits keeper, ruled out for the rest of the season through injury, they turned to Waddington when they failed to find a substitute as did Positive Image.

“It’s not the first time I’ve played goalie but I am not a goalie,’’ Waddington said.

“I played for my team in the first game and because of the lack of goalies at the same ranking, the second game also needed a goalie.

“It was a great night and it ended with positive results. It didn't have really play-off consequences, so that made it much easier on me. It was still stressful but a lot easier.

“For BDA Spirits, MVP was probably justifiable because I conceded three goals and we won 4-3.

“The second game there were other player regular players who played better than me, but given the circumstances, they gave it to me.”

Waddington refused to take the credit for the two wins, instead stating that he was happy not to lose .

“Both my teams were the ones that made the difference for the wins, especially in the second game where Positive Dental came back from being 4-1 down to win,’’ he said.

“All I did was step in to give my teams a chance to play and they were the ones who took advantage of the opportunity and turned it into a win.

“I was just as happy not to have been the reason the teams lost as I was to have been a small part of the teams’ success.

“It was just one of those nights where stars were aligned and it fell in my favour. It could easily have gone the other way.”
