Dillas and Campbell to compete in Caribbean

Plenty at stake: Jarryd Dillas, the island’s top player, will join Walker Campbell in the Dominican Republic in January. The pair are among a field of 108 players that will take part in the event

Jarryd Dillas and Walker Campbell have accepted invitations to compete at the Latin America Amateur Championship in the Dominican Republic in January.

The local pair are among a field of 108 players that will take part in the event to be held at the Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog course January 17 to 20.

There is plenty at stake, with the champion receiving an invitation to compete at the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in April.

In addition, the winner and the runners-up will be exempt into the final stages of qualifying for the Open Championship and the US Open Championship. Finally, the champion will receive full exemptions into the Amateur Championship, US Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible.

Dillas is making his fourth appearance at the Latin America Amateur Championship and Campbell his third.

The pair will be looking to capitalise on their knowledge of the conditions at the 7,471-yard, par 72 Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog course, ranked No 1 in the Caribbean and 39th in the world, having competed there when it last hosted the championship in 2016.

“It’s the second year that the tournament is being played in the Dominican Republic and we were both there in 2016, so hopefully we learnt a bit and can both go out and put on a good show,” said Dillas, the Bermuda Amateur Match Play champion and Bermuda Golf Association vice-president.

“The winner of that event gets an invitation to the Masters and so Walker and I will be ready for that.

“We will be looking to go there and put on a good performance and hopefully make the cut at the very least, but really try and get in there.”

The stroke play championship will be played over 72 holes with a cut for the leading 50 players, plus ties to be made after 36 holes. In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided by sudden-death play-off.
