Asbestos abatement classes on offer
Hazardous material will be removed safely from a Southampton hotel this month.
A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health said asbestos abatement classes will take place at the Fairmont Southampton from May 12 to 20 as part of the hotel’s renovation works.
Armell Thomas, the Chief Environmental Health Officer, explained: “Asbestos, once a popular material for its fire-resistant and strengthening qualities, was commonly used in building construction until the 1970s.
“However, research linked exposure to airborne asbestos fibres with significant health risks, including lung cancer.
“In response, efforts were initiated to remove asbestos from existing buildings and eliminate it from construction materials, prioritising public health and safety.”
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “It is essential that anyone involved in asbestos removal undergoes proper training to mitigate these risks.
“These training courses are crucial in safeguarding the health and safety of individuals handling asbestos, ensuring that all work is conducted with the highest standards of care."
Classes at the hotel include certification and re-certification courses for abatement workers and supervisors.
Asbestos abatement workers certificate ($500 fee): May 12 to 15, 9am to 5pm
Asbestos abatement supervisors certificate ($700 fee): May 12 to 16, 9am to 5pm
Worker re-certification course ($350 fee): May 19, 9am to 4pm
Supervisor re-certification course ($500 fee): May 20, 9am to 4pm
