Political smoke

May 16, 2012Dear Sir,You published a letter yesterday from a Mr Brownlow Adderley of Southampton which suggested that the One Bermuda Alliance was engaged in some kind of a whispering campaign against Mr Rolfe Commissiong, a candidate in the upcoming election. That is not true. The only mention of Mr Commissiong’s long-ago conviction and that of our Member of Parliament Shawn Crockwell that I know of has been in Mr Adderley’s letter. The OBA from its beginning has pledged not to get involved in the kind of ugly and unnecessary finger-pointing that has characterised past elections. We stand for a brand of politics in which such tactics have no place. What Mr Adderley’s motive was in making his allegation I do not know. What I do know is that the closer the election comes, the more Bermuda can expect letters and statements like his, which make nasty allegations against individuals and groups for political gain. If we can go by past behaviour of supporters of the Progressive Labour Party, we can expect race to rear its ugly head in due course. I would ask Bermudians to recognise this kind of behaviour for what it is — political smoke. This election is going to be one of the most important in Bermuda’s history. It is all about the PLP’s 14 years of mistakes, miscalculations, misbehaviour and out-of-control spending that has landed us in a financial mess of frightening proportions. It is all about putting a stop to that reign of foolishness and allowing changes to be put into effect that will get this country back on track, and let us regain our self-respect.THAD A HOLLISChairmanOne Bermuda Alliance
