A waiting shame

Taxi stand: the arrivals area of the LF Wade International Airport is shown in this file photograph

Dear Sir,

On July 13, I arrived home on American Airlines Flight 308 from Miami. We were due to arrive at 9.45pm, but we arrived 10.45pm instead. With that being said, that night JetBlue and American Airlines from New York were also late. We all came in one behind the other.

I went through immigration and customs quickly, no problems at all. When I stepped out of the airport, there was a long line waiting for taxis, which was a bit ridiculous. The only taxis there were prearranged taxis waiting for their passengers. I sure hope that the dispatchers are advising these taxis when flights are arriving, so they can be available.

There was a tourist standing behind me who was unsure where she was going and a bit distressed. I didn’t get the taxi driver’s name that heard the conversation, but he politely stepped in, looked at her phone to see where she was going and told her “I know where that is”. He was so kind to her and took her to her destination.

I finally got a taxi and, on the way home over the radio, I could still hear the dispatcher saying taxis are needed at the airport. I left a lot of passengers at the airport. I could confirm that, as there were many people left waiting for transportation. May I suggest hotels and guesthouses hire minibuses and have them pick up their guests from the airport because it appears our taxis are unreliable.

Alternatively, minibuses can have a consultation with the transport minister or Transport Control Department to allow them to charge a flat fee for tourists and locals from the airport. The present situation is unacceptable.
