Socially insulting piece of writing

Kevin Comeau

July 29, 2012Dear Sir,“With the election soon upon us, there is an additional reason for whites to listen carefully to the concerns of the black community. Simply put, if they fail to do so, the Progressive Labour Party will likely be re-elected, and many in the white community believe that outcome will be extremely detrimental to the future of Bermuda.“Justified or not, there is a strong feeling in Bermuda’s white community, with a fair amount of support from blacks employed in senior positions in International Business, that this country’s large economic problems are, to a great extent, the result of Government incompetence and the perception of corruption.” Kevin Comeau (KC)Family, this has to be about the most intellectually and socially insulting piece of writing that has been printed in the last few months.Mr Comeau’s primary reason for even writing this at this time is based on the impending election. He says the white community should “listen” carefully to the concerns of the black community. No where does he say the white community should “act” on the concerns of the black community. He goes on to say “justified or not, whites believe that the economic downturn is because the black government is incompetent and corrupt. For good measure he threw in that “Blacks in senior levels of IB” felt the same.“The latest political opinion poll, conducted by MindMaps for The Royal Gazette, revealed that 88 percent of white voters would vote for the One Bermuda Alliance in the General Election, suggesting that the OBA has inherited the white vote.“The same survey found that just 52 percent of black voters would vote for the PLP, with 15 percent opting for the OBA and 30 percent saying they don’t know or refused to state their preference.” — RG Jan 4, 2012The voting patterns of most whites have not changed since 1968. They have always, and will always vote against the PLP. They have always viewed most black PLP politicians and the majority of the black populace as incompetent and corrupt. Historically there have always been “conservative blacks” who went along with them.Craig Cannonier claimed to wish to address “the evils of white supremacy and racism” way back in November. He has said zip since then.Near six months ago I had written a letter regarding present day race issues to Mr Cannonaire and the OBA. They have ignored it. The Royal Gazette, thus far has not printed it. So how is it Mr KC can get near five full pages to write the “Gospel” he wishes us to digest? Is it that if a black man speaks on race it is non-valid, yet when a white man speaks on it is the new gospel? Is it that we have to wait until whites wish to speak about race, for the entire community to discuss it?Give me a Kit Kat bar please. The OBA is the “Party of Change” yet they will not discuss race in any way shape or form besides some two bit line about “One Love, One Bermuda”.In our canvassing we have knocked on the doors of many white Bermudians and guest workers. Either they politely ignore our existence and refuse to open the door or they welcome us into their homes and have long discussions on many issues including race.I say this because it would be completely wrong for me to paint the picture as if there are not whites who wish to see a more fair and equitable society. There are many, just seemingly not enough. As a lawyer, is KC advocating for these privileged whites to do something more than listen? I can listen to my wife all night, but unless I actually do something it has been just her venting, correct?Family, we have come a long way, and we are socially intelligent enough to see the coded words in this Gospel from Cardinal KC. In one fell swoop he acknowledges racial inequality, yet condemns the PLP as incompetent and corrupt. Any guess as to his political preferences? His words are that “whites must listen carefully to the concerns of blacks.” Like you, I have long stopped waiting in line to be ignored. We will be talking to the ballot box.Stand Strong FamilyCHRISTOPHER FAMOUSDevonshire
