Bermuda slumped to their worst defeat in one-day internationals since being granted official international status 19 months ago as they were walloped by 10 wickets in their World One-Day League opener at the Jaffreys Sports ground on the outskirts of Nairobi today.

Put into bat, Bermuda suffered a disastrous start when opener Clay Smith was adjudged lbw on the third ball of the first over and from that point the day got progressively worse.

Aside from a courageous half-century by Smith's fellow opener, Dean Minors (52), all of Bermuda's recognised bats failed to come to grips with Kenya's varied attack.

And it took a cavalier innings of 23 from last man Kevin Hurdle to add some semblance of respectability to the total as they were eventually bowled out in 39.3 overs for 133.

Kenya's two openers, David Obuya - later voted man of the match - and Maurice Ouma made mincemeat of that target, thumping the required runs in just 18.1 overs.

Obuya's unbeaten 75 included 12 fours and one six, and Ouma's 57 included 11 fours.

Hurdle gave up a painful 55 runs in five overs while the normally reliable Dwayne Leverock, who opened the bowling, conceded 37 off six overs.

Bermuda must now regroup in time to play Ireland in their second tournament match at the same ground on Wednesday.

Full report in tomorrow's Gazette.
