MP: Blacks must jump on e-commerce bandwagon

While at 32 and 30 Simon Turner and Doug Soares feel that they are "a bit old for web entrepreneurs'', Government MP Dale Butler has focused on their skin colour and used them to illustrate the economic racial divide in Bermuda.

The two white men yesterday introduced their new web service, aboutBermuda.com, to 40 potential customers, one of whom was Mr. Butler, the Human Resources Manager of the Little Venice Group.

Extremely complimentary on the service which provides factual information on Bermuda in a host of areas pertinent to people looking to live and work on the Island, Mr. Butler also claimed that the business was an example of "the white community looking after their economics''.

"The white community are meeting their needs by getting involved in information and technology,'' he said. "They are creating new economic dynasties for themselves while the black people have not caught on that this is a liberator,'' he added.

"You could be at home sleeping and a website like this would be making you money,'' he said.

Sounding a wake-up call to black Bermudians, a genuinely perplexed Mr. Butler asked: "How do you change the mindset of Bermudians who want to take baseball bats to smash up things and use violent dogs?'' He said that with the advent of the Internet black Bermudians were being given an opportunity to make significant economic headway and strongly suggested that they "should find creative ways '' to take advantage.
