Busy week ahead for Hamilton docks

German sail training vessel, and a Woods Hole research vessel all expected to visit.

Meyer Agencies reported the research vessel Cape Hattaras , conducting marine research off Bermuda for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, was due to come into port in St. George's today. She will berth at Penno's Wharf.

Meyer also reported the 800-foot Greek tanker Niki was in local waters on Monday, stopping at Five Fathom Hole to pick up two overseas welders and repair equipment. She was en route from Philadelphia to Angola, Africa.

The regular calling container ship Bermuda Islander arrived on Monday afternoon from Salem, New Jersey a day ahead of schedule. She off-loaded 84 containers and sailed on Tuesday.

Somers Isles was not scheduled to call.

And the US Navy supply ship Strong Cajun arrived on Tuesday and dropped off five 40-foot containers of supplies for the small number of personnel remaining at the naval base. She sailed the same day.

John S. Darrell agents reported the arrival of another US Navy ship, the Aubrey Fitch . The Perry Class frigate berthed in Dockyard on Tuesday afternoon for fuel and provisions.

And next Tuesday, Darrell will represent four US minesweepers Gladiator , Defender , Pioneer and Warrior , also for fuel and for provisions. They are staying at HMS Malabar -- set to close at the end of the month -- until next Thursday.

Darrell also reported the paper ship Medallion , carrying 350 tons of news paper, was expected to arrive next Thursday from New Brunswick, Canada for two days .

Harnett and Richardson reported the Astra Lift stopped in Bermuda on Sunday to off-load two huge electricity generators for Belco. She went on to Tampico, Mexico to pick up a cargo load. The heavy cargo ship, which can carry up to 300 tons of cargo, was built in 1978 and overhauled in 1994.

Container Ship Management reported the arrival of the Oleander as scheduled this week. She carried 155 dry containers, 46 refrigerated, six cars, one excavator and heavy steel.

Harbour Radio said the schooner Thor Haeyerdahl is due to arrive in the Island sometime this week. No time has been confirmed. The German privately sponsored sail training vessel was originally expected yesterday.
