Coretta Scott King to be honoured at symposium
civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. next week.
Premier Pamela Gordon will give the opening remarks at a symposium on women's issues featuring Coretta Scott King. And Opposition Leader Jennifer will deliver special remarks.
The symposium, hosted by Akinstall International, is geared toward the research and development of women's issues.
According to Valirie Akinstall, founder of Akinstall International, response to the symposium has been favourable, especially in terms of corporate sponsorship.
"The Frontrunner Awards show men what women have accomplished in various areas,'' said Akinstall.
Mrs. King, founder and President of the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, will be the guest speaker.
Elynor Williams, vice president of public responsibility for the Sara Lee Corporation, will also speak at the event.
Mrs. King is the latest recipient of the Sara Lee Corporation's annual Frontrunner Award.
The award honours the outstanding achievements of women in the arts, business, government and the humanities.
A grant of $25,000 was contributed to the Coretta Scott King Endowed Scholarship at Antioch College in Mrs. King's name.
Since the assassination of Dr. King, Mrs. King has become recognised as an activist in her own right, particularly in the field of women's issues and human rights.
Mrs. King is co-chairperson of the Full Employment Action Council, dedicated to a national policy to provide a job for every person who is willing and able to work.
As founder of the King Center, Mrs. King has furthered her husband's vision of non-violent action.
Tickets for the May 28 symposium, to be held at the Southampton Princess Hotel Amphitheatre and moderated by race relations activist Eva Hodgson, will be $100 per person. For further information call 295-9995.
