Holistic health centre re-opens

Stressed out business people can now get treatment for almost any condition thanks to a new holistic health centre which has opened in the centre of town.Sankofa, The Wellness Centre, which means return, go and look or seek, opened its doors at 1 Chancery Lane last month having moved location and undergone a complete rebrand.Owners Dr Larry Trott and Dr Karen Simons said they had seen an increase in business as a result of the recession with stressed managers and employees checking in for treatment and police officers dropping by for counselling sessions to help them deal with the recent upsurge in violence on Bermuda’s streets.Based in the former site of True Reflections, the doctors will be looking to continue the legacy of close friend Annie Young who ran her business there for the past 10 years.The Wellness Centre started life as Integrated Healing Arts 14 years ago in Bermudiana Arcade, before relocating to Washington Mall for eight years and then on to Victoria Street.Dr Trott and Dr Simons have been involved with healing work and martial arts for most of their lives, with Dr Trott overcoming a number of health issues when he was younger through the use of alternative therapy and medicine.He also made a miraculous recovery from triple malaria and typhoid fever in 1997.His experiences led him to start up his own business offering treatments for the body, mind and spirit, ranging from acupuncture, Tui - Na (Chinese medical massage), acupressure, magnetic cupping, Chakra balancing, Chinese herbal formulas, empowerment coaching, regression therapy, Tai Chi/Chi Kung classes, workshops and courses and transformational retreats. Treatments for multiple conditions are also offered.Some of the typical ailments the pair offer treatment for include migraine, stress, back ache, neck pain, asthma, fatigue, irritability, depression, lack of energy, hypertension, PMS, infertility, anxiety, digestive conditions, vertigo, chemotherapy side effects, frozen shoulder, high cholesterol, sports injuries, trauma, frustration and anger.They have also expended the business and taken on a new energy massage therapist and nutritionist Ashley Tucker.But the biggest change has been the move to a new location with Chancery Lane fast building a reputation as a Bohemian business community with neighbours Down to Earth, Fresco’s, Serenity and Common Ground all referring customers to each other.“It’s a wonderful place,” said Dr Trott. “It’s serving us quite well, we are more visible and it is a really busy area that we are in which is good.“Since we have been here we have seen growth and the opportunity to serve new people.”The changes were inspired by a focus group held by Aderonke Bademosi Wilson of The Stratford Group, with clients wanting to a see a change in name and colour scheme, resulting in a new warm environment which they have set up a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of downtown Reid Street.Clients can walk in for treatments or have them done at their place of work, with nutritional and team bonding sessions for company staff as well as teaching them how to cope with stress.The health centre also provides self development and growth classes in addition to complementary energy medicine.“Anyone that has a physical issue is going to be impacted in their mental and emotional self,” said Dr Simons. “So we have to look at the whole person and not just the physical pain that they have.”Dr Trott said that 85 percent of chronic disease were related to stress but through the proper assessment and treatment him and his colleagues are able to get to the root cause of the problem and equip the sufferer with the right tools to deal with it and a save money at the same time.“The recession has led to all kinds of stress in people,” he said. “I’ll be walking along the street and people will come up to me and say ‘Can you help me with stress?’“Everybody is dealing with it from school teachers to CEOs, and even police officers who have been dealing with the recent increase in violence have been coming in for counselling, which is something new to us.”The centre also runs empowerment tours, the latest of which will be to Peru from July 17 to July 21, with previous visits to Puerto Rico, as well as workshops and retreats for companies, as well as working in partnership with empowerment coach Les Brown.Dr Trott, who contributed to Barnes & Noble bestseller ‘Bouncing Back - Thriving in Changing Times’ and released a DVD entitled ‘Peaceful Wind Qigong’, will be launching a new DVD ‘Peaceful Wind Meridian Qigong’ soon.Sankofa is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 11am and 5pm, with on Tai Chi classes on Monday from 5.30pm to 7pm.
