Rain fails to dampen spirits of volunteers

The College Volunteer Corps are hoping for better weather next weekend as they attempt to paint the Harbour Light Rehabilitation Centre in Hamilton.

Saturday's downpour prevented much of the work from taking place as they initially had planned, but Steven Bourne, one of the organisers of the group, said the turnout of some 40 volunteers was still good.

"Needless to say we were disappointed with the weather (on Saturday),'' Mr.

Bourne said. "But I think we met that with a positive spirit that only comes through volunteering.

"We danced in the rain, we sang songs and introduced ourselves as college students which is basically one of the aims of the college volunteer corps anyway.'' Despite the rain he said the decision was made to go ahead with the project next Saturday.

However, some sanding and painting of five shutters was completed inside the building on Saturday so the day was not lost, he explained.

"We did manage to paint some of the building because we got it in time before it started raining. We attempted to paint the rest of the building, but it just got washed away.

"The rain came down but it did not dampen our spirits and everyone who came said they would be happy to come back next Saturday.''
