AS&K marks 20 years of giving scholarships
young Bermudians with the support they need to pursue legal careers.
And this week senior partner of the firm and member of the first Legal Scholarship and Bursary committee John Campbell explained: "We very much wanted to provide encouragement and support to young Bermudians who had a desire to pursue a legal career, particularly those in financial need.'' "Back then there was very little financial support available to students from the private sector,'' he noted.
Mr. Campbell said the committee shared a common view that such students should not be denied the opportunity to pursue their aspirations due to a lack of funds and labelled that as the main reason for introducing the awards.
Since then, the company has recognised more than 75 students with rewards totalling in excess of $1 million.
"We are proud to have been the springboard for launching the legal careers of so many of Bermuda's attorneys,'' said Mr. Campbell.
Past recipients of the legal awards include Deputy Premier and lawyer Jerome Dill, and lawyers Timothy Marshall, Monica Jones, John Barritt MP, Cameron Adderley, Victoria Pearman, Marc Telemaque and Alan Dunch.
"We are hoping this year's winners may one day be as successful as they are,'' said Mr. Campbell.
"Appleby, Spurling & Kempe will remain committed to providing financial assistance and professional development to those seeking to become a part of Bermuda's future legal community.''
