Carroll is sure-fire winner in poster competition
The winners of the tenth annual Fire Safety Awareness poster and essay competitions have been announced.
Beating out more than 400 other challengers, 18-year-old David Carroll of CedarBridge Academy earned the place of overall winner with his colourful poster bearing the slogan: "React Fast 2 Fire''.
The Fire Service engraved David's name on the winner's shield which he is entitled to keep until next year.
In the six-year-olds-and-under category, Kimberly Govia of Heron Bay Primary came out on top, followed by school mate Stedman Santucci in second place, and Saltus Cavendish pupil Ryan Burrows in third.
Vaughan Bassett of School House Nursery received a highly commended award.
Dion Samuels of the Christian Deliverance Academy picked up first place in the seven-to-ten-year-olds division with LeAnna DeShields of Mount Saint Agnes Academy and Korie Tucker of Gilbert Institute placing second and third, respectively.
In the 11-years-and-older category, David Carroll again placed first, Jason Stevens of CedarBridge Academy earned second, and Alaina Nelson of Clearwater Middle School came third.
All first place winners were presented with a $75 cash prize sponsored by ZFB/ZBM as well as a certificate.
Those that earned either second, third or highly commended places also received a certificate.
For the Martin Grimes Memorial Fire Safety Awareness essay contest, each school was allowed to submit three entries.
East End Primary School student Kris Furbert won the elementary division with Joshua Brown of Heron Bay Primary School and Rakai Augustus of Prospect Primary School each earning a highly commended award.
The middle and senior school category was won by Veronica DaCosta of Mount Saint Agnes Academy, with Whitney Institute Middle School student Doral Frances and Shayna Henderson of the Christian Deliverance Academy both receiving highly commended awards.
Both Kris and Veronica were presented with a book prize while the highly commended winners earned certificates.
