Drumming up musical interest with a wide-ranging recital
Music lovers, particularly those who lean to percussion, are urged to check out "Drumania'', Tempo Drum School's first student recital.
Top Bermuda drummer Kevin Maybury promises, "It's not just the ordinary recital.'' Students will be featured with a live band showing off their newly-developed talents in the fields of rock 'n' roll, reggae, blues, swing, soca -- even a gombey demonstration.
"All styles of music and all styles of drumming will be featured,'' says Mr.
Maybury.
The show is this Sunday at 3.30 p.m. at the Pembroke Sunday School. Also on the programme will be special guest artists and some "very entertaining'' acts, he says.
Students will paired off with each other in sort of "battle of the drummers'' duets and Mr. Maybury himself will demonstrate a variety of exercises he's developed himself, as well as a number of drumming styles.
"Any parent or kid who's interested in drumming should come and see how much fun it is and get a general idea of what needs to be learned,'' Mr. Maybury says.
About 40 students between the ages of six and 16 will be in the show, which will last about two hours.
There will be drum set demonstrations, and rudiments of military drumming will be offered.
Mr. Maybury's resume includes the Gene Steede Showband, F-Troop, Time Tunnel, Jazzology, Shinbone Alley Cats, Bermuda, Jimmy O'Connor's Cabaret Showband and Legacy, to name just a few. In his 25 years as a professional drummer he's toured 15 Caribbean nations with various groups, Europe, South America and the US.
Proceeds from the recital will go to buying new equipment for the school. The recital is being sponsored by Pianos Plus, and it is there tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 (adults) and $10 (children under 12). Tickets are also available at the Music Box, or at the door.
