Slide show to raise funds for PALS
funds for cancer patients.
This will occur tomorrow night when Patients Assistance League (PALS) hosts an audio visual slide show by its president Ann Smith Gordon.
The presentation, titled Treasures & Traditions of Russia, will take the viewer on an 800-mile journey through European Russia by river boat between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Mrs. Smith Gordon noted that viewers through her slides will get the chance to visit Moscow where they will see Red Square, pass through the vast red brick wall of the Kremlin, marvel at the beauty of Cathedral Square and gaze upon the exhausting collection of treasures in the enormous Armoury dating from the 12th Century A.D.
"We will hear about Stalin's bloodiest dictatorship in the history of the world and the dreadful hardships imposed upon the people throughout the centuries, including the Second World War, which even today manifests itself in frightening organised crime, escalating drug abuse and alcoholism,'' she said. "We will experience a magical sight at 11 p.m. one evening when the rays of the setting sun linger on the ancient wooden churches on the island of Kizhi as the full moon hovers overhead...'' In St. Petersburg, Mrs. Smith Gordon added: "We will visit magnificent Palace Square with the world famous Hermitage Museum, containing three million works of art. As well, we will explore Peterhof, the Tzars summer palace built by Peter the Great, containing what is probably the finest display of waterworks in the world. Eight thousand gallons of water are pumped through the beautiful fountains every second.'' The presentation, which is under the distinguished patronage of Mrs. J.
Thorold Masefield, will begin at 8 p.m. at Mount St. Agnes Academy's auditorium.
Tickets, at $10, are available at PALS' office on Cedar Avenue -- next to the Government tennis stadium, or from PALS volunteers.
