`Soaring' soprano tunes in for benefit
One of Bermuda's best-known sopranos returns to the Island this Saturday to give a special recital in aid of the Fern Wade Ministry.
Leslee Christopher, who will sing a programme of classical and religious songs, operatic arias and spirituals, has been described as a "dramatic'' singer.
Currently living in Atlanta, where she is employed by Clark Atlanta as coordinator in their federally-funded crime prevention programme, Ms Christopher says she is still able to find time to perform in venues around the city -- in fact she will soon be seen in a Breath of Life television broadcast.
As a pupil of Joy Blackett, she was offered a scholarship from her teacher to attend the Juilliard School of Music but, at the same time, had also been offered the opportunity of joining `Up With People'. Faced with a difficult decision she chose the latter, and spent a year travelling throughout the US and Mexico where she performed for that country's president.
In 1995, Leslee Christopher moved to Atlanta to attend graduate school where she obtained her Master of Social Work degree.
In Bermuda, she sang in many solo concerts and with Joy Blackett and was featured by Theatre Associates in her debut concert at City Hall. Ms Christopher was also a member of Bermuda's leading gospel group, the `Chorale Dynamics', singing with them on tours to New York, Boston, Washington D.C. and Dallas, as well as the UK and Holland. She also sang solo on their first record album.
Leslee Christopher's Recital, which is presented by The Sepia Group, and will be attended the Premier, Pamela Gordon, takes place at the Hamilton Salvation Army Citadel this Saturday, March 7 at 7.30 p.m., admission $20. Please telephone 292-3315 for further details.
