Youngsters help prepare new dive site

just one of many activities a group of youngsters from the UK completed to earn Duke of Edinburgh awards last week.

The group, hosted by the Bermuda Regiment for the past three weeks, undertook a range of activities to qualify for bronze and silver awards.

The activities included working toward the "sports diver'' level of the British Sub Aqua Club, which 12 of the 14 youngsters managed to achieve, under the watchful eyes of several BSAC divers from various London clubs.

During their visit, the group also managed to walk the length of the Island, undertake a research project, and produce a comprehensive report.

And the group of youngsters -- ranging from 15 to 17 years of age -- helped the Bermuda branch of the BSAC to rip out the interiors of the Xing Da in preparation for its sinking off the Island as a diving attraction.

At the end of their three-week stay the young people were welcomed at Government House where Governor Lord Waddington awarded them their certificates during an informal ceremony in the gardens.

After handing out the certificates for two bronze and 12 silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards, the Governor took the students on a spontaneous tour of Government House and the gardens and later enjoyed beverages with them.

He also thanked the staff and instructors of Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme in the UK.
