Geisha Chin thinks dance recitals are best left to kids. The problem is that so many moms cannot afford the classes.

It is with that in mind the dancer came up with an idea to help struggling, single mothers this Christmas.

Sixteen women will take to the stage in December to raise cash through a performance, Collectively Her. The proceeds will go to single mothers who could use a financial boost; Ms Chin is now asking for nominations.

“Their name won’t be published anywhere,” said the owner of Bohdi Fitness. “We just want to help.

“We hope to give vouchers and financial aid to one family, and toys to another. We also have someone who is willing to donate turkeys to another five single mothers.

“There are a few girls in the company who are single mothers. I have seen some moms come straight to my class from work, then leave class to go to a second job so they can provide for their family.

“For my kids’ classes, I’ve had a few single parents not being able to sign their kids up for the programme they want because of financial constraints.”

The 25-year-old dancer moved to the island from Toronto two years ago to marry Bermudian Matthew Mills.

“I was part of a professional dance company called Eye Candy,” she said. “I had an agent and there were gigs downtown every weekend. When I came to Bermuda in December 2015 I was really shocked by the lack of opportunity, not just for dance but for all the arts.”

In 2016 she started Bohdi Fitness. This year, she saw another opportunity — although there were adult classes at some dance schools, the performances were geared towards younger students. She started Bohdi Company in July.

“Recitals are fine for some women,” she said. “But others feel a little uncomfortable performing with a lot of children.

“They feel that the parents came to see the children dance, and they are getting in the way of that.”

Tickets for Collectively Her will be available on www.ptix.com this month. The show will be held at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium for the Performing Arts on December 9, at 9pm.
