A Canadian IT specialist became Bermuda's fourth road fatality of 2007 after he lost control of his bike on Saturday morning.

David Roberts was described as an energetic and popular young man by friends yesterday. The 27-year-old Toronto native died after he lost control of his bike on Parsons Road, Pembroke, at 6.20 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Roberts worked for Capital G and was very involved in social group and party promoters Barmuvinjam before his death.

Vejay Steede, a member of Barmuvinjam, said Mr. Roberts was a big fan of dominoes, football and poker.

He said: "We are still quite shocked and can't grasp that he is gone and not going to be here.

"He was on top of the world when this happened. This is quite devastating.

"He had recently made some good strides at Capital G and won some poker tournaments. He also won the first-ever Barmuvinjam Open Domino Tournament three weeks ago."

Mr. Steede recalled meeting Mr. Roberts at last year's Cup Match festivities over a game of dominoes and said since then he has been a "force to reckon with" and became very involved in organising events and parties with the group.

The group plans to organise a poker tournament with a David Roberts Memorial trophy so that his life can be celebrated and not forgotten.

He said: "David was a good friend with a great personality. He was full of life he was always ready to socialise and be out and meet knew people. He was a really loveable and great guy. This is a tragic thing that has happened.

Police are appealing to witnesses in a red car who stopped to help Mr. Roberts after he lost control of his bike while travelling east on Parsons Road.

After his bike struck the kerb across from Pembroke Rest Home he landed on the road. He was later taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Seven weeks into the new year four people have already died on Bermuda's roads. Last year 14 people died from road accidents, but the fourth fatality of 2006 was not until May.

Mr. Roberts' employers, Capital G, extended their condolences to his family and friends.

A spokesman said Mr. Roberts was a "hard working individual and a tremendous asset to Capital G's IT Department who will be missed".
