Bike accident leaves driver with broken arm
A motorcyclist was taken to hospital with a broken arm and cuts and bruises after a collision with a car in Hamilton Parish. The accident happened yesterday morning on North Shore Road, near the junction with Lemon Grove Road.
No one else was injured.
20-year-old charged with sexual assault
A 20-year-old man was charged with serious sexual assault against a relative yesterday in Magistrates? Court.
The man ? who can not be named for legal reasons ? did not have to enter a plea because the charges are indictable and will be heard in Supreme Court.
He is charged with committing serious sexual assault and threatening to cause bodily harm.
The court heard that the accused put the victim in a headlock and indicated he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her.
The victim claims he said he would kill her if she did not have sex.
The defendant was remanded in custody and will appear before the courts for mention on August 9.
Ex-hotel staffer admits stealing over $7,000
A former employee of Fairmont Hamilton Princess admitted Thursday in Magistrates? Court to stealing over $7,000 from the hotel through a British Airways account.
Monica Correira Pacheco, 24, of Mariners Lane, Spanish Heights, Pembroke was charged with three counts related to stealing.
Between January 31 and March 27, the defendant stole $5,232.60 from her place of employment, the court heard.
She stole an additional $2,099 between April 8 and April 19.
Between January 30 and April 19 she acted as a clerk with the intent to defraud and did falsify an account belonging to British Airways Ltd. maintained by her employer.
Pacheco had been employed at the hotel from August 25, 2005 as a front desk cashier until she was terminated on April 21.
Pacheco was arrested on June 1 under the suspicion of theft.
?I am so sorry and I will gladly repay with interest,? she said.
The defendant is currently employed at the Bermuda International Airport as a security scanner.
She was released on $5,000 bail until sentencing on September 14.
New ferry to be named Charles Hilgrove W. Fox
The fifth addition to the Transport Department?s fast ferry fleet has been named after a St. David?s luminary.
The will arrive in mid August, the Ministry of Tourism and Transport announced this week.
Mr. Fox was well known in the St. David?s community as the owner of the popular restaurant Black Horse. He was also a prominent figure in the Eastern County and Cup Match cricket games.
Mr. Fox was respected for his pride and love of the East End?s culture and people, the Ministry said.
Minister of Tourism and Transport Dr. Ewart Brown said: ?This Government undertook to recognise Bermuda?s heroes and the Ministry of Tourism and Transport is committed to preserving the memory of those who the paved the way for the Bermuda we enjoy today.?
He also thanked those who participated in the competition to choose the ferry?s name.
?I particularly want to thank the children from East End Primary School whose beautiful posters were a delight to view and whose creativity was simply fascinating,? he said.
The individual who submitted the winning entry in the naming contest decided to remain anonymous and declined the prize of a $1,000 travel voucher.
The Ministry hopes Mr. Fox?s family will participate in the launch of the ferry.
Jewellery stolen from Pembroke home
Several items of jewellery were stolen from a Pembroke home on Thursday. The complainant told officers that sometime between 10.30 a.m. and 3 p.m., an unknown culprit gained access to the home. Police are currently investigating the matter.
Robbery victim beaten with his own helmet
A Pembroke man was knocked to the ground by a blow from his own helmet and robbed of $150 on Thursday.
The 42-year-old victim told Police he walked to his motorcycle, which was parked on Burnaby Street, at around 1 a.m. where he proceeded to put on his helmet. He then bent over to tie his shoes.
When he stood up, three young men surrounded him. The victim said one of the men took his helmet off his head and hit him with it causing him to fall to the ground. The culprits then took the helmet and $150 and fled.
The victim described the helmet as a black Harley Davidson with a black visor and ?Muggy? airbrushed in red and white lettering on both sides.
He described the suspects as young black men between 5 foot six inches and 5 foot 9 inches tall. Police are asking witnesses to the incident call the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit at 295-0011.
