Overtaking on the inside leads to injuries for cycle passenger

A passenger on an auxiliary cycle was injured after it was involved in a collision with a car and a wall on South Road, Paget.

The 16-year-old Warwick boy suffered leg injuries and was taken to hospital as a result of the collision, which happened shortly before 3 p.m. last Thursday.

A car was being driven by a 30-year-old Warwick woman west along South Road when it turned into the entrance of Harmony Club. According to a Police report two auxiliary cycles were following behind the car and one overtook on the outside, however the other cycle attempted to overtake on the inside and it was then that the two vehicles collided.

The rider of the second auxiliary cycle, also a 16-year-old Warwick boy, was not injured in the incident, but his passenger sustained non-life threatening leg injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Damage was caused to the rear of the car and the auxiliary cycle. The bike rider was given a ticket by the Police for driving without due care and attention. The woman car driver was not injured.

Taxi driver could have witnessed attack

Police are wanting to interview a taxi driver who drove two crewmen after they had been attacked in Court Street.

The pair had been lured to the area by a man who demanded money before hitting them with a PVC pipe in the early hours of Wednesday. The 19-year-old and 23-year-old victims then hailed a taxi which took them to the 24-hour Esso City gas station on Richmond Road.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call Acting Sgt. Dean Martin at Hamilton CID on 299 4542.

Jeep ploughs off road

A white jeep left the road and crashed into a field off Harrington Sound Road in Smith?s, smashing into a wooden fence and breaking part of a retaining wall before coming to rest on it side.

A Police patrol discovered the wreck, which was near the junction with Arrowroot Lane, at 4.20 p.m. on Saturday.

There was no one in the jeep when officers investigated, however it is believed the driver attended the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital of his own accord for treatment and was later released.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, and currently think the jeep had been travelling east on Harrington Sound Road when the driver lost control and the vehicle ended up in the field, which is a few feet below the level of the road.

Poll finds there?s no ?Mr. Wonderful?

Is Bermuda the place to find Mr. Wonderful? Readers of Britain?s Daily Express newspaper think so after the paper last week ranked Bermuda as the top country in the world for finding the right man.

But there?s bad news for Bermuda?s single male population ? users of The Royal Gazette?s website, www.theroyalgazette.com, disagree, by a ratio of five to two.

An unscientific poll on the website that ended yesterday saw just 18.5 percent of the 826 people who took part say yes to the question: ?Is Bermuda the place to find Mr. Wonderful??

Exactly half ? 50.0 percent ? of users said ?no? to the question, which was posted on Tuesday and ended at 1 p.m. Friday.

Almost a quarter of respondents ? 22.8 percent ? said they did not care, while 8.7 percent said they did not know.

Fund launched for Dejon

Following the TV broadcast of the Dejon Simmons Story documentary about the 17-year-old?s horrific motorbike accident and his subsequent recovery from burns affecting 90 percent of his body, an appeal has been launched to help Mr. Simmons afford future surgery.

Radio station Hott 107.5 has established a fund for listeners and others to contribute towards assisting Mr. Simmons and his family.

?This fund will be designated towards some of the future surgical procedures that Dejon will undergo, possibly for the rest of his life,? said Elroy Smith, of Hott 107.5, in a statement to radio listeners and the general public.

?All your prayers have made a significant difference in the sustaining strength this family has gained through this crisis. However, your gifts, offered in love, for this young man and his family, will be greatly appreciated,? he added.

Anyone who wishes to donate to the fund for Mr. Simmons and his family can do so by going to any branch of the Bank of Bermuda and asking about the Hott 107.5 Dejon Simmons Fund.

A 30-year-old Pembroke man appeared in Magistrates? court yesterday on three charges including assault with intent to rob.

Nikia Jevon Burchall from Middletown Lane was not asked to plea as the case is indictable.

But his lawyer, Charles Richardson did ask the court what his client was alleged to have stolen as the only items listed were a pink tank top and skirt ? worn by the woman Burchall is alleged to have assaulted.

?I can?t see my client making these fashion choices,? he told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.

However the details of the case were not discussed in court.

Burchall?s bail application was postponed until December 7 at noon. Meanwhile Burchall, who was sporting a cast on his left arm, pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence along Middle Road on the night of November 30.

He also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of not complying with a Police officer by providing a sample of breath for analysis.
