Carrot juice warning to consumers
Consumers have been warned to check the expiration dates on carrot juice amid a health scare in the US and Canada.
The Island?s shops cleared their shelves after California-based Bolthouse Farms issued a voluntary recall of its 100% Carrot Juice following reports of life-threatening botulism cases.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, two botulism cases in Toronto are confirmed to be associated with consumption of the affected juice. Four cases have also been reported in the USA. Botulism poisoning has symptoms including respiratory failure and paralysis. According to CBC news in Canada, two Toronto residents are paralysed and on ventilators in intensive care. Estlyn Harvey, Bermuda?s Chief Environmental Officer, said local food importers had recalled the affected products, and food suppliers had cleared their shelves.
She listed these as:
Bolthouse Farms 100% Carrot Juice sold in 1 litre and 450 millilitre sizes
Earthbound Farm Organic Carrot Juice sold in 1 litre and 450 millilitre sizes
President?s Choice Organics 100% Pure Carrot Juice sold in 1 litre and 450 millilitre sizes
She warned: ?The general public needs to know that they must check their supplies to ensure they do not have these products with the expiration dates up to and including November 11th. They should either discard or return them to the place of purchase.?
