Cop injured after BMW driver runs him down
A Police officer hurt his hip and suffered cuts and abrasions after a car slammed into him and sped off with the officer clinging to the hood.
The 30-year-old driver, of Hamilton Parish, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm by impaired driving early yesterday after being stopped on North Shore Road as a result of the Police investigation of the road death of Kevan Foggo.
Police had cordoned off North Shore Road and were still working the scene and diverting traffic after 1 a.m. when a white BMW failed to stop, ignored Police directions and drove through a manned Police barrier before finally being halted.
When the officer told the driver to turn off the engine and get out, the man, who had two female passengers, drove straight at the officer, striking him.
The officer landed on the hood as the car accelerated eastward on North Shore Road.
According to Police, the driver swerved from side to side in an attempt to shake the officer off.
He fell when the driver slammed his brakes suddenly, throwing the officer into the westbound lane of North Shore Road at the junction with Fractious Street.
The BMW then continued eastward. The car was found on Kitty's Drive, where the driver was arrested.
The officer suffered cuts and abrasions to his head, right hand and forearm and also injured his right hip.
He was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.
