CURE forum looks at the 'Classroom to Career' transition

The Commission for Unity and Racial Equality is focusing on helping students transition from school to the workforce at its third annual workshop.

CURE will hold the "From Classroom to Career" workshop at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute next Tuesday.

Participants will gain insight into Bermuda's highly competitive workforce and a realistic view of what they can expect as young workers.

CURE has held several workshops for young people on race, diversity and equality over the years.

The organisation decided to focus on older students after employers noted students were not as prepared as they could be for the demands of the workplace.

One employer replied to the workforce survey by saying: "Preparation for work and presentation skills are on a notable decline... We can't train an attitude that says, 'you have to do this for me.'"

The students will learn about industry demands, anti-discrimination, employment rights and tips on how to move up the corporate ladder once they have found a job.

The workshop will run all day and representatives from Bermuda International Business Association, Department of Statistics and Butterfield Bank will be participating. Many other employers will be setting up exhibits to educate the students on the opportunities that are available on the Island.

CURE wants as many employers to participate as possible and urged anyone interested in addressing the students, hosting a workshop or setting up a booth to contact them at 296-0613.

Students are also encouraged to register through their schools for the event.

Community Affairs and Sport Minister Dale Butler will be opening the event.
