Drivers divided over GPS

Cabbies are still divided over whether the GPS tracking system Government legislated be included in all taxis is a positive development.

While some drivers told yesterday GPS has been a waste of money, others still hope the system will improve service.

?Well, we still have a lot of kinks to iron out, hopefully in a year or two we will get something out of it,? said one optimistic driver, who refused to be named. ?Work hard and we?ll make it.?

But Angel Furbert, who has been a driver for almost 50 years, said the system is unnecessary and should not have been forced on drivers.

?We don?t really need it. We get a few jobs off of it, we get a lot of blanks off it too,? he said.

Driver Sherman Hollis also had problems with the system.

?The only thing GPS is doing is costing the taxi drivers and owners a lot of money,? he said. ?If Dr. Brown wants to do anything he can change the system at the Airport. It would help taxi drivers a lot if he gave a pay rebate on gas.?

Another common problem drivers reported was that after people call for taxis, they don?t wait for that taxi but get frustrated and hail another before it arrives.
