Family struck twice by Bermuda?s cruel vices
The grandmother of Ryan Burgess has hit out over speculation that the teenager?s motorcycle death on Parsons Lane and that of another man occurred in suspicious circumstances.
Alfreda Samuels said the Police investigation into the death of 18-year-old Mr. Burgess in February remains open. However, she has heard nothing to suggest that this, or the death of Akil Williams ? found seriously injured near a motorcycle at an adjacent spot on Saturday ? were linked.
Mr. Williams died in hospital on Monday, and Ms Samuels condemned a television news report that night which quoted un-named sources suggesting the pair met their deaths in incidents ?staged? to look like traffic accidents as ?stupid, insensitive and ridiculous?.
Ryan?s twin brother Stefan, 19, was badly injured in a machete attack on July 23, two hours before teenager Jason Lightbourne was gunned down in Ord Road, Paget.
Ms Samuels, 69, from from Devonshire, said the family is still searching for answers in relation to the double trauma.
?We don?t have a clue what happened to Ryan. We don?t know much about the circumstances until we get the death certificate,? she said. She explained that although the certificate was ready to pick up, the family has been unable to face up to the sad task yet and has not asked for details.
Amid a lack of any firm answer about how Ryan came to meet his death, or who attacked his twin brother, Ms Samuels added: ?We are keeping an open mind. I?m hoping the Police come up with something, definitely.?
She explained that when news of 24-year-old Mr. Williams? fate first came through, she did not initially realise he had been found very close to where Ryan died on Parsons Lane. However, her daughter Andrea Simmons ? the twins? mother ? drove past the scene and told her.
Ms Samuels said Mr. Williams knew the Burgess twins and she was saddened to hear the news that he had lost his fight for life at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Monday.
?I feel sorry for his family, and sorry for Jason Lightbourne?s family too,? she said. ?Having to deal with something like that just drains you and it takes a while to come back from it.?
Mr. Williams? family could not be reached for comment yesterday. A Police spokesman said that both his death, and that of Mr. Burgess, are being treated as road traffic fatalities. It is expected that the Burgess case will be concluded in the near future. An autopsy on Mr. Williams is still pending.
Police also issued an appeal for anyone who saw Mr. Williams in the hours before the incident on Parsons Lane to call Pol. Con. Eddie Smith at the Traffic Enforcement Unit on 299-4265 or the main Police number on 295-0011.
