Island could become satellite industry hub ? Michael Scott
Telecommunications Minister Michael Scott is seeking to make Bermuda a satellite industry hub.
He has been to London and Paris to drum up business and expand on breakthroughs last year which saw several satellite industries set up here.
Speaking at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation in London Mr. Scott outlined new regulations aimed at making the island a base for managing space-based networks.
In Paris Mr. Scott had meetings with CEOs from Ariannespace, Alcatel, TerreStar, Intelsat, Telenor, Avanti and others.
He said: "Part of our plan, in addition to following through on previous business, was to advertise Bermuda's entry into this important and highly lucrative industry."
Bermuda is set to host a space and telecommunications conference next spring.
The Bermuda delegation also met with educational institutions which provide space-related legal and technical training, with a view to bringing these courses to Bermuda in conjunction with sponsorship from the Island's growing space sector.
Meanwhile Bermuda's tussle with the Isle of Man over the rights to use a potentially lucrative satellite spot are continuing with the two islands still locked in talks.
Director of Telecommunications William Francis said: "We are still dealing with the technical terms of the respective filings ? that's a long process."
