Island reeling from weekend of bloodshed

The teenager gunned down in Paget early on Sunday was named yesterday, as the young man seriously injured in a machete attack two hours earlier moved out of intensive care.

Police confirmed that Jason Lightbourne, 18, was killed at the wheel of a car on Ord Road.

Jason?s father, Edmund Lightbourne, said he did not wish to comment yesterday. Jason was believed to have been staying with his father on Sylvan Dell Road, off Ord Road, at the time of the murder.

His mother is understood to have been on holiday in South Africa at the weekend. She has been informed her son has become the Island?s fifth shooting victim and the first gunshot fatality since an outbreak of gun crime started on April 24. She was due back on the Island yesterday or today.

Meanwhile, the victim of Sunday?s machete attack on Frog Lane, Devonshire ? named locally as Stefan Burgess ? was said to be in a ?satisfactory? condition in hospital last night.

King Edward VII Memorial Hospital confirmed Mr. Burgess, 19, who suffered serious cuts to his head and body in the bladed weapon attack near his home, was out of intensive care.

A man at the family?s Devonshire home said concerned relatives were at his bedside yesterday. He said that they were still coming to terms with the loss of Mr. Burgess? twin brother, Ryan, who died in a road accident in February when his bike collided with a tree on Parsons Road, Devonshire.

Fears of retaliatory gun battles on the streets of Bermuda were raised yesterday. A Police source said that guns had always been around the Island but rarely used.

He added: ?Now it looks like they are willing to use them.?

Meanwhile, the senior Policeman heading the probes into the murder and the machete attack remained tight-lipped yesterday when pressed by reporters for more details on the investigations.

Chief Inspector Tracy Adams did not reveal whether officers knew what type of weapon was used to shoot teenager Mr. Lightbourne, or whether any weapon had been recovered from the Ord Road area. ?What we don?t want to do is hamper our inquiries in any way,? he told a press conference at Prospect.

He confirmed that about 30 officers were involved in both investigations.

And Ch. Insp. Adams said both were being treated separately by the Serious Crime Unit at this stage, although he said that any link between the murder and the machete attack two hours earlier could not be ruled out.

Ch. Insp. Adams, who did not say whether Mr. Lightbourne had been alone in his car at the time of the shooting, added: ?It is still early in investigations and Police continue to follow all lines of inquiry.

?It would not be prudent at this time to divulge any specific investigative strategies.?

He thanked the public for information received so far, but appealed for anyone with any information to call the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315. They can also phone the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.

Asked what the public response had amounted to, Ch. Insp. Adams stated: ?We have been getting assistance from the public as to persons that might have heard specific things and we are asking anyone that might have been in the neighbourhood or area with information to give us a call.?

Investigations into recent shootings at Swinging Doors nightclub and outside the The Swizzle South Shore remain unsolved.

And when asked if a reward might be considered to get witnesses to come forward in relation to these and the latest attacks at he weekend, Police spokesman Dwayne Caines refused to rule out such a move. But he said that ?conventional means? would be used at this time.

?We are going to use all our investigatory resources... and then look at other methods as time progresses.?

In a message to members of the public concerned about the recent number of violent attacks across the Island, Ch. Insp. Adams said: ?I would like to reassure the public that Police are doing the best job they can.?

But he reminded the public they ?had a role to play? in helping catch the culprits.

?The whole community must play a part in helping to solve these crimes,? he added.

Police last night dismissed as ?speculation? reports claiming that a relative of the murder victim had been threatened by gang members and warned about speaking to Police.

It was also reported that gun shell cases had been recovered on Ord Road that were similar to those found outside The Swizzle South Shore after the shooting in that area.

Responding to the reports, a spokesman said: ?We are following up all lines of inquiry and choose not to speculate at this juncture.?

Ord Road was eerily quiet yesterday in the wake of the murder.

Graffiti was strewn on the road and walls near the area where the shooting took place. ?Wayne Man Fallin (sic) Soldier, RIP Jason?, ?2 Piece Marlo RIP Jason? and ?RIP Wet Wet? were some of the messages apparently left by friends. There were also two sheets sprayed with graffiti hanging from the former Jamaican Grill?s windows.

Police on Ord Road searched through grass, trees and debris on the sidewalks for clues that could help the investigation.

Crime scene investigators used sticks, wire hangers and metal detectors to search on the main road as well as people?s yards. Two officers rode through the area on motorcycles, while Ch. Insp. Adams later told reporters that the car murder victim Mr. Lightbourne was travelling in when he was killed would be forensically examined.

Premier Alex Scott met Governor Sir John Vereker yesterday to talk about the weekend?s crimes. Mr. Scott told ZBM News that a joint statement on steps to combat violent gun crime would be issued after consultation with Cabinet today.
