It pays never to underestimate Bobby
THERE aren't many sports in Bermuda that will take you around the world. Have you ever travelled so far away from Bermuda and yet still run into a Bermudian? Even if you don't know their name they have a face that you know you've seen before.Bobby Miller might just be one of those Bermudians you see on your world travels.
Bobby (pictured), has been on so many Olympiads it is difficult to remember them all, but here's a rundown.
1988 — Thessalonika, Greece.
1990 — Novi Sad, Span.
1992 — Manila, Phillipines.
1996 — Yerevan, Armenia.
2000 — Istanbul, Turkey.
2002 — Bled, Slovenia.
2004 — Calvia, Mallocia.
2006 — Turin, Italy.
Although Moscow held an Olympiad in 1994, Bobby did not enter these games. However, he was in Moscow in 1969 on his way to Armenia.
Bobby has a World Chess rating — the World Chess Federation has given him a rating of 1869. Bobby started playing chess more than 30 years ago and has taken on some of the top players in the world. One player whose country sent him to Spain for the 29th World Chess Olympiad was Farid Munoz. It was Colombia verses Bermuda and Mr. Munoz must have thought he could walk all over Booby. But that was not going to happen — he underestimated the talents of Mr. Bobby Miller.
Our game of the week features Bobby playing white against Farid's black. In Diagram 1, Farid had just moved his knight from E7 to D5 for two reasons — to attack the bishop and to stop the queen giving a check. This was no way to stop Bobby, as you can see in Diagram 2. Now Bobby feels as though mate is on the way when Farid tries to trade (Diagram 3). Bobby disagreed and put him in check, cutting off the king's escape — to make Bobby's day, checkmate, as can be seen in Diagram 4.
Well done Bobby.
