Man accused of importing heroin
A man went on trial yesterday for attempting to smuggle more than 150 grams of heroin hidden in hair products into Bermuda.
Michael Troy Berkley, 43, denied importing and possessing heroin with the intent to supply the drugs. He also denied importing and possessing cannabis.
He was allegedly caught at the Bermuda International Airport with 155.57 grams of heroin and 13 grams of cannabis.
The court heard that Berkley was questioned by a Customs officer at the airport on May 10, 2004 on his return from a ten-day trip to Atlanta and Jamaica.
Crown counsel Graveney Bannister told the Supreme Court jury that the Customs officer became suspicious because the man had so many items of hair product in his bag. The court later heard that packets of drugs were found in the products.
The man, of no fixed abode, is represented by lawyer Victoria Pearman. The trial continues today.
