Speeder gets break

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner cut a merchandiser for Barritt?s some slack this week when instead of disqualifying him from all vehicles for numerous speeding violations ? some in excess of 70 kph ? he simply imposed a fine.

Annon Smith, of Waterloo Lane, St. George?s pleaded guilty to speeding on August 16 and again on August 20 at 61 kph and was fined $300 for each violation, or 30 days in prison.

It then came to light in court that Smith had two additional charges for speeding, one for 71 kph and another for 63 kph.

Mr. Warner asked Smith why he had missed earlier court dates in relation to these fines and Smith replied that he had family matters on his mind at the time.

Standing in court with a smile on his face, Mr. Warner asked Smith if he thought this was a ?joke? to which Smith replied that he did not and Mr. Warner asked him why he should not disqualify him from driving.

Still smiling, Smith said he needed his motorcycle for his job.

After some thought Mr. Warner simply fined Smith an additional $300 for each violation and told him if he ever came to court again for speeding, he would disqualify him from all vehicles ? regardless of what the speed was.
