Street fight trio caught on camera are sentenced

Three of four young men who admitted to getting in a fight on Reid Street received six-month prison sentences suspended for two years.

Dwyia Victor Blyden, 20, Jahki Dillas,22, Quan-Marley Derrick Lowe, 21 and Dejean Clinard Smith, 24, pleaded guilty to affray in relation to the incident on March 11.

In addition, Dillas admitted possessing a bladed article and attempting to cause Jahdel Rogers grievous bodily harm. The other three pleaded not guilty to wounding Mr. Rogers with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.

The Crown offered no evidence on those charges.

During sentencing yesterday Llewelyn Peniston and Rick Woolridge, the lawyers for Blyden, Lowe and Smith, urged Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons to consider their clients guilty pleas and youth.

Smith, Lowe and Dillas were identified by CCTV footage that filmed the entire incident. They all pleaded guilty immediately as did Blyden.

According to the summary by Crown counsel Robert Welling, the men were filmed leaving Captain's Lounge heading toward Butterfield Bank. Mr. Rogers was attacked as he walked down Burnaby Street onto Reid Street.

CCTV footage showed the defendants chase Mr. Rogers and put him on the ground kicking him. Dillas pulled a machete from his clothing and struck Mr. Rogers twice. Smith, Lowe and Dillas entered a car after the attack.

Officers arrived at the scene moments later and arrested the men from the car. Dillas was found wearing a stab proof vest with the words, "Sometimes you need a little protection".

Blyden was arrested nearby.

Smith, currently serving a two-year sentence for possession of cocaine, received a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years along with the probation he will be on when he is released from prison.

Blyden and Lowe also received a six month prison sentence suspended for two years and two years probation with a 9.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m. curfew and other stipulations.

Dillas will be sentenced solely on Thursday. He is represented by Charles Richardson.
