Teen jailed for cocaine possession
A man who admitted possessing freebase cocaine with intent to supply has been jailed for a year.
Willard Dwight Burks pleaded guilty to the charge at Magistrates? Court on Monday along with another of possessing cannabis.
Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said both offences were committed in Paget on August 22. Police executed a warrant at the defendant?s Sylvan Dell Road address, finding ?plant material? and ?three rock-like substances.?
When interviewed, Burks, 19, told Police the materials were marijuana and crack cocaine. Analysis showed there was a total of 1.74 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $150, and 3.84 grams of cannabis.
Defence lawyer Larry Scott tried to persuade Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that, since his client had pleaded guilty, the matter was suitable for a fine rather than a custodial sentence.
However rejecting this ? and pointing out Burks could have been jailed for a maximum of ten years ? Mr. Tokunbo sentenced him to 12 months for the cocaine offence and three months for the cannabis, to run concurrently.
