American formally denies gun charge

An American lawyer accused of possession of guns and ammunition entered not guilty pleas at Supreme Court yesterday.

Gary Barket, 61, of Arkansas, denies possession of a .32 calibre revolver, a 6.35 mm semi-automatic pistol and four rounds of .32 ammunition.

The weapons were allegedly discovered in a garment bag as he was screened at the airport on January 25 before a flight to Newark, New Jersey. Barket was granted bail and will face trial on June 23.

A man pleaded guilty at Supreme Court yesterday to causing grievous bodily harm through impaired driving.

Entering his pleas before Chief Justice Richard Ground at the March arraignments session, Barry Lee admitted injuring Sasha Swan on July 5 last year. He also admitted causing actual bodily harm to Octavia Azzario, by driving his car recklessly in Front Street.

Lee, 33, of Smith's Parish, however denied driving while impaired in Front Street on July 5. He also entered a not guilty plea to driving with more than 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Mr. Justice Ground adjourned the case for mention at the next arraignments session on April 1 and extended bail. He said: "I convict him on counts one and two, and counts three and four, I order to lie on the file."

Yesterday's arraignments session also heard pleas from another motorist accused of causing grievous bodily harm.

Nisham Sabanayagan, 33, of Smith's, pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm through impaired driving on March 14 last year. He allegedly injured Amanda Kaplan while driving his motorcycle in Somerset Road.

Sabanayagan also denied driving under the influence, and pleaded not guilty to a third count of driving with more than 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. He was bailed to appear at the next arraignments session.

An 18-year-old man from Pembroke yesterday pleaded guilty to two charges of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 14, between March 1 and 31 of last year. The matter will be mentioned at the next arraignments session on April 1.

In a separate matter, a 17-year-old boy pleaded not guilty to unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 14 on May 5 last year. He was bailed to face trial on June 23.
