Driver injured in collision with tree
A man suffered head injuries after his car crashed into a tree in the early hours of yesterday.
The driver, a 30-year-old from Southampton, hit an embankment and then veered off to hit a tree. The accident happened at 1.30 a.m. in Parsons Lane, Devonshire.
A Police spokesman said: "It appears that the car was travelling south on Barkers Hill when the driver, a 30-year-old Southampton man, lost control at the junction with Vesey Street and struck an embankment, before colliding with a tree a short distance away.
"The Bermuda Fire Service also attended the scene and had to extract the driver from the vehicle."
The man received head injuries and is being treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where his condition was yesterday described as "stable".
Two arrested for impaired driving
A motorcyclist was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving after he crashed into a parked car and then ran off.
The incident happened in Wellington Street, St. George's, at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday.
A Police spokesman said: "It appears that the motorcycle was travelling east on Wellington Street when the rider, a 39-year-old Pembroke man, lost control and collided with the parked car. Though injured, the rider fled the scene on foot. However, he was subsequently located and arrested on suspicion of impaired driving."
The man was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he is described as "stable".
Police arrested one other motorist on suspicion of impaired driving at the weekend.
There were also reports of 16 road accidents resulting in injury, 16 damage-only collisions, and four vehicles reported stolen. Officers are also investigating eight burglaries.
Man denies burglary charge
Chris Ray, unemployed and of no fixed abode, was charged with burglary yesterday when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.
He was not required to enter a plea, as these charges were indictable and must be heard in the Supreme Court.
Ray has been charged with seven accounts of burglary from stores in the Cedarparkade building, The Washington Mall and a home in Warwick. It is alleged the Ray has stolen money, jewellery and other valuables.
Ray was remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to March 17.
Cycle thief imprisoned for two years
A 45-year-old man admitted to theft and prowling when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
The court heard from Crown Counsel Paula Tyndale that Chet Wilmont admitted to stealing a blue Piaggo auxiliary cycle from a home in Paget.
The owner alerted Police that the cycle had been taken from his home without his permission after he had left it unattended in his driveway with the key still in the ignition.
Later the same day, a man walking a dog noticed Wilmont prowling around a residence at Burgess Point Road, Warwick. He said he saw Wilmont peeking through a window and then saw him enter the home. He then saw Wilmont leave the house, get on a blue Piaggo and ride off.
Wilmont was later arrested and questioned about both of the matters and admitted to the crimes. He said that the reason he was at the Warwick home was because he was looking for something to steal.
Wilmont has had multiple previous offences of similar charges and he was recently given a six month suspended sentence in late January for 24 months. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner cautioned Wilmont that if he gets in trouble within that 24-month period then his prison time would be activated.
Wilmont was sentenced to two years for all of the offences.
