Bermuda suffered its first two road deaths of the year this weekend.

Police said today that a 48-year-old Southampton man was killed as a result of a collision on Ord Road, Paget, on Satuday night.

And a 17-year-old male died today of injuries sustained in a crash on Friday in which he was a passenger on a motorbike.

Police said it appears the Southampton man, named today as Rudell Smith, was riding a motorcycle in a westerly direction near the junction of Norden Lane when he tried to negotiate a left hand bend around 7.15 p.m. and collided with a young woman on a pedal cycle and a young man who was walking with her. The motorcyclist then lost control and hit an embankment.

He was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance but later died of his injuries.

It appears that the young woman on the pedal cycle sustained non-life threatening facial injuries and was also taken to KEMH for treatment, while the young man was not injured.

In Friday's crash, the 17-year-old was the passenger on a motorcycle heading east between Khyber Pass and Longford Road in Warwick when the accident happened at around noon. He sustained serious head and internal injuries. He was also named today by Police as Miguel Franco, of Paget.

A Police spokesman said: "It appears that the truck was travelling east on Middle Road and the auxiliary cycle was behind the truck, also travelling east.

"The car was travelling in the opposite direction. It appears that the truck slowed down and the cycle attempted to manoeuvre around it, however the cycle was unable to and collided with the truck and the westbound car.

"The rider of the cycle was not injured, however the cycle's pillion passenger sustained serious head and internal injuries."

The teenager, from Paget, was admitted to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The drivers of the truck and car were both uninjured.
