Health Department seeking activists in climate change fight

The Department of Health is looking for individuals and organisations working hard to defend the Island's population against the effects of climate change.

Nominees must have made a difference to Bermuda's well-being by contributing to the World Health Day 2008 theme 'Protecting health from climate change.'

World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 to mark the founding of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which has identified climate change as their main concern this year.

As humans continue to contribute to the negative impact of climate change, health is expected to be one of the most effected sectors. If current climate change patterns continue, humanity will face more injury, disease and death related to natural disasters, heatwaves, higher rates of food-borne, water-born and vector-borne illness, as well as more premature deaths and diseases related to air pollution.

All human activity related to urban development, transport, energy use, food production and consumption, land use and water resources affect both climate change and health.

That's why the Department of Health wishes to recognise an individual and an organisation that have worked hard to protect Bermuda's health from this climate change.

Nominations must be submitted to the Health Promotion Office no later than Mach 31 and for more details about who is eligible or to submit a nomination call Pauleter Stevens on 278-6504 or email healthpromotion@gov.bm.
