Plans to expand library system

Expansion of the library system, revision of the 1981 Human Rights Act and a focus on the cultural heritage of the North Hamilton Area are all receiving part of a $13m budget.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ budget will focus on a publication of narratives concerning the contributions of black people who lived in North Hamilton during the days of segregation.

The project will be developed along with a train tour of the area which will identify key buildings and locations while also providing stories about the North Hamilton.

Also included in the budget are funds for the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, which, in conjunction with the Bermuda National Library, will develop satellite libraries within community centres throughout the island.

The libraries will hopefully target teens who leave the youth library around the age of 12, but do not feel comfortable using the adult library.

Funds have also been provided for the Department of Human Affairs to conduct a comprehensive review of the 1981 Human Rights Act in order to update the document.

Finally, a portion of the budget will support the Commission for Unity and Racial Equity (CURE) which will be celebrating the 200 anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade on Sunday, March 25.

The celebration will be at the Commissioner’s house in Dockyard and will also have guided tours of Bermuda’s slave trade displays.
