Premier talks with BHS headmaster about traffic congestion

The Premier met with the Principal of Bermuda High School to discuss ways of addressing the congestion caused during the school term.

The meeting comes in the wake of a Motor Car Act amendment that would allow airport minibus operators to transform into school busses.

Yesterday a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport said: “The Premier, the principal and the principal designate of the Bermuda High School discussed a variety of issues surrounding traffic patterns as well as the impact of traffic in the area of the school and its wider implications.”

Last year Minister of Transport, Dr. Ewart Brown, told the House of Assembly more than a quarter of traffic congestion during the mornings and afternoons was caused by parents on the school run.

He proposed that allowing airport limousines to do double duty and transform into school busses could reduce congestion into the city.

He told the MPs that the airport limousines tend to be idle outside of the peak arrival times, from 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. and added: “We have a pool of vehicles waiting to be put to a more creative use.”

Private schools wrote letters letters of support for the concept and that some of the schools “can’t wait to give it a try”, Dr. Brown said.

Yesterday’s meeting was the first in a series of meetings that Dr. Brown has set up with heads of private schools on the Island.

His spokeswoman said that Dr. Brown found “the dialogue was useful and informative and represented a constructive start in addressing the traffic issues confronting Bermuda”.
