Woman admits $24,000 theft
A woman has pleaded guilty to stealing $24,688 from the company Transcription Services Bermuda.
Phyllis Marva Iona Soares, 49, also known as Phyllis Burchall, was acting in the capacity of clerk or servant to the company at the time of the offence, according to the charge.
In addition to admitting theft when she appeared at Supreme Court yesterday, she also pleaded to nine further counts of forging Bank of Bermuda cheques, uttering false cheques and obtaining credit by false pretences. All the offences date from 2002 and 2003. The defendant, of Whaling Hill, Southampton, pleaded not guilty to three further charges of forgery, uttering false documents and obtaining credit by deception. Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale asked for these to lie on file, not to be proceeded with.
Puisne judge Carlisle Greaves extended Soares’ bail on the condition that she surrender all her travel documents. He ordered her to appear before the court again tomorrow morning so a date for sentencing can be fixed.
