Decision expected soon on future of Morgan's Point

A decision on the future of Morgan's Point could be made within the next few days.

The 90-day deadline for Beam Ltd ran out Monday and now Development and Opportunity Minister Terry Lister is said to be considering his next move.

Beam were given a three-month exclusivity contract to enable them to come up with a proposal for the former US Naval Annex in Southampton, after negotiations with the successful bidders were broken off.

But it has been revealed that at least one other bidder has re-entered their tender for the 250-acre site to the Bermuda Land Development Company.

It is not known if the BLDC or Mr. Lister have accepted the proposal, but it is understood the parties are due to meet next week.

Beam, fronted by Alan Burland of BCM McAlpine, were runners-up for the project in 1997, losing out to Morgan's Harbour Investment Ltd.

Their plan included a golf course, hotel, marina, shopping village and homes.

One bidder who has re-entered the fray are Capital Consultants Ltd, with businessman Kit Astwood at the helm.

Formerly known as King's Point Land Co., their golf, home and hotel concept is said to have funding already in place.

It is not known whether Beam has secured backers for its project, but it is understood that Capital Consultants Ltd is ready to move.

The $250-million deal with Morgan's Harbour Investment Ltd collapsed during the summer, after Mr. Lister pulled the plug on the talks.

However, it is understood that MHIL were close to finalising their package.
