Government says no work planned for Roberts Ave.
A Devonshire woman has called for improvements to be made to a heavily-used road in her parish.
But Government has no plans to make her life any smoother in the immediate future.
"Roberts Avenue seriously needs to be looked into -- where traffic, school children and pedestrian walking is heavy enough to warrant a wider road and pedestrian crossing,'' said the woman who asked to be referred to as Mrs.
Simmons.
The Stadium Heights resident was speaking after Frog Lane Condominium Association Chairman Terry Flood called on Government to build a new crosswalk at a Frog Lane danger point before someone was killed.
He has been repeatedly turned down and Mrs. Simmons noted: "It is the same old cliche -- the cart before the horse.'' The construction work at the National Stadium site, which lies between Roberts Avenue and Frog Lane, had led to the widening of Frog Lane and the installation of some crosswalks. The same should have been done for Roberts Avenue, argued Mrs. Simmons.
"Since construction is supposed to be in progress at the National Stadium, traffic is definitely heavier during the daytime and one can only agree, it is for the safety of residents,'' she said.
But a Ministry of Works and Engineering spokeswoman said the next sites for major road work were at Wilkinson Avenue in Hamilton Parish and St. John's Road in Pembroke.
And there were no major concerns over Roberts Avenue.
She said: "A lot of road improvement work presently being done is based on sorting out major accident spots.
"Just going in and doing road work at Roberts Avenue is not as simple as it seems, for example, Government may have to purchase land from landowners.'' However, she stressed that she was not ruling out having the work done, if needed.
"If there is something specific that needs doing, residents can make a request to the Ministry and the Works Board will look into it,'' she said.
