Canadian drug smuggler to be sentenced
A Canadian who admitted his part in smuggling $150,000 of cocaine into Bermuda will be sentenced today.
William Maximchuk, of Calgary, Alberta, pleaded guilty to importing cocaine on June 28 last year. He has been remanded in custody since his arrest.
And a date will also be set for the trial of Paula Madill, also of Calgary, who denies charges of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
At today's arraignment session, a trial date is expected to be set for former Policeman Tony Bukhari, who faces allegations in connection with the death of Liz Cadell, who was a sub editor at The Royal Gazette .
Bukhari denies manslaughter in the death of Miss Cadell, who died after taking an aspirin overdose on May 31, 1997.
Also appearing today is Bissoonduthsing Ramchurn, of St. George's, who denies manslaughter in connection with the death of German student Catrin Schaefer last summer.
Miss Schaefer, 23, died in a road accident on September 27, 1998. Ramchurn, also pleads not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while over the limit and whilst impaired.
