Senate approves land purchases
and sell one lot.
The purchase of 23 acres of virtually untouched land on Smith's Island in St.
George's Harbour for $200,00 was heartily endorsed by Senators, who spoke about the Island's beauty and history.
Introduced by Government Sen. Calvin Smith , the Smith's Island deal was applauded as a chance to preserve Bermuda as it once was, with conservation tours much like those at Nonesuch Island.
Opposition Sen. Kim Swan , while he approved the deal, called for Government to provide a dock to "landlocked'' residents of the island who do not own a dock on the main St. David's Island.
"It is one of the oldest tracts of unspoilt land in Bermuda and has an enormous history,'' Sen. Smith said. "This will be kept for future generations in perpetuity. It's always my desire that we make things like this more accessible to the public.'' Senators passed the sale of 220 square feet on the southern side of the paved area at the Rubber Tree at the Junction of Middle Road and Khyber Pass Warwick.
The $40,000 sale to Baptiste Builder's Supply would allow for the widening of the access road to the property.
Sen. Smith said currently traffic exiting the roadway onto Khyber Pass Road cannot get a clear view of traffic coming down the busy route.
Also yesterday, the purchase of the lot at the corner of Church and Court streets in Hamilton was passed without comment.
