Woman fined for assaulting Police officer
assaulting a Police officer can be costly.
Tammy Susan Barra, 30, of Pleasant View, North shore Road, was ordered to pay $300 in fines in Magistrates' Court after she pleaded guilty to using offensive language in a public place, violently resisting arrest, and assaulting a Police officer on October 21.
The court heard Barra was visiting a friend at No.1 dock at 12.50 p.m.
Suspicions were raised when she walked past the Nordic Empress ship's check point. Ship security filed a complaint against her.
Barra, who was with an unknown male, was stopped by a plain-clothed Police officer on Front Street in front of The English Sports Shop. The officer gave an order for Barra to stop which she ignored.
The officer then tried to detain Barra who used offensive language.
"Bermudians are f***ed up,'' she reportedly said. But Barra denied saying this and she claimed that the officer had grabbed her without explanation.
Crown counsel Veronica Daley said the officer noticed that Barra's breath smelled of intoxicants. He attempted to arrest her and she said: "I'd like to see you f***ing try.'' She then kicked the officer in the shin, and bit his right forearm, puncturing the skin, when he tried to grab her.
She was taken to the ground kicking wildly. When officers attempted to place Barra in the Police car, she spat at an officer's face and on his shirt. In the struggle, Barra grazed her right shoulder for which she refused medical attention.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis asked her the reason for going on to the cruise ship.
She said: "I wanted to see my girlfriend. I don't know about you, but nobody grabs me without an explanation.'' Barra admitted she had had a couple of drinks that day. Mr. Francis ordered her to pay $100 fine for each count.
