The Royal Gazette and Mid-Ocean News picked up two awards from the Inland Press Association for special sections and features at a conference in Chicago earlier this year.

The sister newspapers entered the Inland Press Newspaper Business Development Network (NBDN) contest with The Royal Gazette winning first prize for its 2008 "Health and Fitness: Going Forward from the 100 Day Challenge" publication.

The publication beat 21 other entries in the 10,000 to 50,000 circulation category. It featured the successful 100 Day Challenge, a fitness and weight loss programme that ran from January to May 2008 with 2,000 residents losing over 6,500 lbs and logging 40,000 hours of activity.

Mid-Ocean News won second place for "Island Cruisin", its annual guide to transport on the Island in the transportation category of 10,000 to 50,000 circulation.

Special sections editor, Peter Backeberg, who attended the conference said: "It's always nice to have the quality of your work acknowledged by your peers, and the conference was a great opportunity to exchange ideas with other people in the industry."

Motorcyclist injures knee in crash

A motorcyclist suffered a knee injury after crashing into the car in front of him.

The car was travelling east on Middle Road in Southampton, with the bike behind it, shortly before 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police say the car attempted to turn right into Rose Hill Road, and the 56-year-old Sandys man on the motorcycle crashed into its rear. The 40-year-old Southampton woman driving the car was not injured.

On Tuesday three cars were involved in a collision on South Road, Warwick, near Marley Beach Cottages.

Confronted with cones in the road as they travelled east at about 11.30 a.m., all three women drivers applied the brakes. The third car hit the back of the second car, which in turn ploughed into the first. None of the women were injured, but all three vehicles were damaged.

Martial artists donate turkeys to the needy

A martial arts school will be providing food hampers and turkeys for families in need over the holidays. The Bermuda Small Circle Jujitsu Academy decided to give to the community in order to "bring a smile to less fortunate families".

"These are serious times we are living in right now and we just want to do our part in helping families less fortunate than ourselves", said Shawn Harvey Sr., senior instructor at the academy.

The first 20 people who call in will be given a turkey.

The academy would like to provide for more families but can only do that with donations from businesses. To make a donation or for more information, contact Terrielyn Harvey on 292-9234.
