Burch, Gozney visit Regiment
Home Affairs Minister David Burch flew to Jamaica to visit the Bermuda Regiment during their field training exercises there.
Sen. Burch joined Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Derrick Binns on the Caribbean island on Thursday.
The training exercise is called 'Irie Onion'.
Members of the Regiment are in Jamaica as part of their annual overseas camp.
As part of the camp, they are engaged in a rigorous series of military exercises aimed at sharpening their survival skills under adverse conditions.
According to a press statement, the officials will pay courtesy calls on the British High Commissioner, the Jamaican National Security Minister and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Chief of Defence staff.
Minister Burch, a former Bermuda Regiment Commanding Officer, said: "Bermuda does not have the type of challenging terrain which can lend itself to intensive training exercises and we believe that at the completion of these manoeuvres, better men and women of the Bermuda Regiment will be the result.
"The community service tasks add to the cultural exchange between our two countries and provide an opportunity for our soldiers to give something back to the people of Jamaica.
"I am looking forward to visiting the Bermuda Regiment in an environment that is quite familiar to me, having trained in these areas during my service in the Regiment."
The officials will also visit troops at various JDF locations in Kingston before travelling to Titchfield Camp in Port Antonio to see members of the main body.
The Bermuda delegation returns to the Island this weekend.
